Henry Freeman

Owen Freeman, age 93, of Bruce Road, Boaz, died Thursday, October 15, 2020, at Marshall Medical Center South.

Funeral service will be Two o’clock p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2020, in the McRae Chapel with Bro. Mike Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethsaida Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday, October 18, 2020 from 12:30 until service time at the McRae Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Freeman was born in Etowah County, Alabama on January 2, 1927, to George Grady & Grace Inez Mathis Freeman. Mr. Freeman retired as a Senior Master Sergeant on Oct. 1, 1968 after more than 20 years of military service. On the 16th day of June 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was assigned duty as an Airplane Engine Mechanic. During World War II he continued to serve in the same capacity while stationed in France and Germany. During the Korean Conflict he performed duty as First Sergeant of the 90th Bomb Squadron, 2d Bomb Wing at Hunter AFB, Georgia. While in the service he completed oversea tours in England, Germany, and the Philippine Islands. During his military service Sergeant Freeman received the following awards and decorations: *Air Force Commendation Medal w/1 Ok Lf C1 *Air Force Outstanding Unit Award 2/1 Ok lf C1 *Good Conduct Medal 2/4 Bronze Loops *American Campaign Medal *World War II Medal; Army of Occupation Medal *National Defense Service Medal w/1 Bronze Service Star *Vietnam Service Medal; Air Force Longevity Service Award w/4 Oak Leaf Clusters *Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon Throughout his military service Sergeant Freeman gave faithful and conscientious service to his country. His Standard of conduct and leadership provided an excellent example for those who were associated with him.

He is survived by his Sister and Brother-in-Law: Joann (Joe Junior) Johnson of Boaz, Sister-in-Law: Rosemary Wilson of Boaz, Nieces: Cindy (James) Graves, Pam (Tim) Whitt, Kay (Jeff) Overstreet, Nephews: Robert Carl (Debbie) Chandler, Donald Wayne (Tammy) Johnson, Bruce Alan (Jennifer) Johnson and Sid Freeman, several great nieces and nephews and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife: Mary Sawyer Freeman, Parents: George Grady & Grace Inez Mathis Freeman, Brother: James Gary (Jim) Freeman, Sister: Marcelle Chandler, Brother-in-Law: Robert Cleve Chandler and Special Friend: Norma Stevens.

Pallbearers will be: Nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to St. Judes or to the Wounded Warriors Project.
