Lin Sellers

February 16, 1928 — August 20, 2013

Mr. Lin Sellers, age 85 of Bruce Road, Boaz, Alabama went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013 at Shepherd's Cove. Funeral service will be Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at2:00 p.m. at McRae Chapel, with Bro. Jimmy Harrison officiating, interment to follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. McRae Funeral Home of Boaz, Alabama is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:30 - 2 at the funeral home. Lin could not wait until he was 18 to join his 3 brothers in World War II, so he eventually wore down his parents to sign enlistment papers. Lin joined the US Navy and toured the Pacific when he was 17-21; his Uncle Sam gave him a minority cruise and let him out the day before his 21st birthday. Lin served on the USS Arkansas, where in 1946, he was sent to the Bikini Atoll Island to watch both the first atomic bombs, Alpha and Baker explode. The Arkansas survived the drop of Alpha (within 400 yards of ground zero) and later sunk during Baker testing. Lin was very proud of his service and duty to "Project Crossroads" and earned the right to be called an "Onsite Atomic Veteran". After an honorable discharge Lin returned home to Alabama, only to stay a short time with his reunited brothers and family before he joined again for the Korean conflict. Lin's Uncle Sam once again sent him off to the Pacific and he went via the North Pole. After completing his service, Lin became the proprietor of a number of successful jewelry businesses in Birmingham, Huntsville and Gadsden. Lin settled in Boaz, always had a big smile, a joke, and would strike a conversation with anyone. It's likely he chatted with you. He loved and was loved by his family. Early in his twenties, Lin joined his Lord's army and he served for 60 plus years. Lin was called from the front line and returned home to his Savior August 20, 2013, where he is honorably discharged but still in the inactive reserves.
